A Sexy, Sudsy ‘Dream’ Assignment

Atlanta photographer Timothy Dolph’s work may be coming soon to a MARTA bus stop or grocery store display near you. Dolph’s heavily stylized beer advertisement, shot in 40-degree weather in East Atlanta Village this winter, just won the 2009 photography division in the third annual Pabst Blue Ribbon Art Contest.
On his website, Dolph explains that the concept, “I Dream of PBR,” literally came to him in a dream.
Or dare we suggest, a brew-induced blackout.
Dolph rounded up 13 gorgeous models in skimpy outfits to pose in frigid temps to portray characters from “Alice in Wonderland” and “I Dream of Jeannie,” and to dress as sleep-inspiring sheep (essentially, a sly way to get leggy models to wear cotton ball-decorated bikinis and ears, if you ask us).

Atlanta photographer Timothy Dolph’s winning picture for a PBR beer ad.

Dolph knows his way around a sexy photo shoot, routinely snapping for Playboy, Penthouse, Cosmopolitan, Maxim, Stuff, FHM, Men’s Health and Muscle and Fitness.
Percolating within the winning image are liberal sips of irony and wit, too. Even more amazing? Dolph bought his first camera off eBay in 2000.
Explains the photographer on his website: “I must have filled up an entire dumpster with prints and negatives. And apart from taking a beginning black and white photo course at the local university, I’m pretty much self-taught.”
Still, Dolph likely will keep his day job even if his PBR campaign pops up on billboards across the city this month.
His winnings from the contest: A mere $1,893 (symbolic to the year 1893, when the brewer first won that coveted blue ribbon, natch). Oh, and a one-year-supply of the suds. Let’s hope he at least scored the 16-oz PBR tall boy cans. . .

Pittsburgh, Playboy, and PBR

February 1st 2009

Pittsburgh:

So I was traveling on Saturday, January 31st from Atlanta to Harrisburg, PA. When I had a layover in Pittsburgh. The airport was decorated all in Steelers getup. Everywhere you looked you would see yellow and black. I am not really a Steelers fan, however, being a child of the 70’s, I know who they are. And not only that, they have the chance to become the only team in NFL history to win the Lombardi trophy an incredable 6 times.

As I was wating for my flight, I want to buy a drink from a coke machine. I put in my money ($1.75), made my selection for a Dr. Pepper and pushed the button. I heard all of this rumbling inside the vending machine and then suddenly out came (2) two Mountain Dews and I was also rewarded with (7) quarters in the change slot. Is it an omen? Does it mean anything? Are the Steelers going to win? Should I plan a trip to Vegas? At least I know that my luck is changing. (at the time of this writing, the Super Bowl has not started yet.)

Playboy:

I made it in Playboy!! Yes, in the Feburary issue of Playboy Magazine, you can see a shot of my friend Carlotta Champagne that I took back in the summer. It is in the GrapeVine section in the back of the book. (Usually the GrapeVine is a B/W page spread and this is the first issue where it is all color) Carlotta has a creative way of sewing together condom packets into functioning clothing. She stitches them together in a quilt like mannor to create purses, mini-skirts, and garter belts. Playboy wanted to use one of my images to premote her art and direct webtraffic to her site for Valentines Day gift ideas. You can also see some of the 30 other images from the shoot at http://www.playboy.com (sorry, but you gotta be a member) Thanks Carly, and now I can check off on my list “Getting published in Playboy”…. and just in time before the company goes bankrupt.

PBR:

Last month, I was asked by the Atlanta local Pabst Blue Ribbon promotion rep to create an image for a national contest that is brewing (haha) at http://www.pbrart.com Woody Coheley has been a long time fan of my work and wanted something to send to the corporate PBR offices in Chicago to let them know that he is doing his job down here. “If anyone can come up with something, I know you can Tim.”

I told him that I would have to sleep on it. And I did. And I had a dream. In fact that is exactly how I came up with “I Dream Of PBR.”

There was a local PBR art show on Saturday Jan. 24th at the Graveyard Tavern and Gallery in E. Atlanta. And I won… First Place. Now the image goes to Chicago for the National voting. Keep your fingers crossed. I think this would make a cool billboard.

One of the funnier things that Woody told me was that he was asking one of my models (Kobe Lee) about “How is Tim Dolph able to get 13 models, some in bikinis, along with (2) two hair and makeups, (2) production assistants, and (1) camera assistant all together at 10:00am on a Tuesday in 42 degree weather?” Kobe’s replay “Hey man, I get to work with Tim Dolph!” haha way to go Kobe. That was just how we rehearsed it. Your check is in the mail.

See the award winning shot below along with the behind the scenes video of everyone freezing their butts off. And thank you all for your support.

That is all for now, so laters.

New Artwork featuring Playboy Models for “That 70’s Show”

November 17th 2008

Below are two images for a new upcoming gallery exhibit entitled “That 70’s Show.”

The first image is of Playboy Special Editions model Malloy Martini in the print titled “Self Portrait”.  I needed an image to put in the gallery’s Artist Profile program and I just hate the idea of just sitting there to get my picture taken. (that is why I am on this side of the camera)  The idea came to me thinking what it was like back in the day when you didn’t need to take your film in to get developed.  I’m sure that plenty of “Self Portraits” were made.

Find more about the model at:  Http://www.malloymartini.com

Next is an image of December 2006 Playboy Playmate of the Month - Kia Drayton.  When I was first introduced to her, I immediately floored by her beauty and presense.  Suddenly, I got this idea of a blaxsploitation /sexploitation 70’s crime fighter….  “Freeze Sucka!!”   (Remembering Foxy Brown and Cleopatra Jones)   She played the part perfectly.  Then I enlisted the help of a good friend Dusty to play “the John.”

Shot at nightime in the Atlanta suburb of Kirkwood at Urban Pie Pizza Joint.  (Actually, right accross the street from Atlanta Police Dept. Zone 6 Precient)  Made for good eyecandy for all the officers when the department had the evening’s “changing of the guard”

“ARTundressed”

Absolutely classy erotic art

The Beate Uhse Erotica Museum Berlin will be hosting the international exhibition “ARTundressed” presented by Erotic Signature. This exhibition of contemporary erotic art will open with a private viewing on 19 September and run until 18 October. Germany’s only Erotica Museum will thus be the third stop in the tour of ARTundressed, following its opening in Miami in May and its visit to Montreal. Together with INASAJA Gallery, the museum will provide a stylish backdrop for “Modern Art for the Open-Minded”. The artists’ works are multifaceted, humorous, bold, eccentric, passionate and expressive, and have something for everyone, whether art enthusiast, connoisseur, fetish fan, or follower of alternative or sexy lifestyles. Everyday erotica has also by no means been neglected. Erotic art is often not taken entirely seriously and viewed as not being sufficiently respectable to be seen as “real” art. By presenting the world’s best erotic art, Erotic Signature aims to challenge this misconception.

The World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today

The ARTundressed exhibition is an impressive collection of erotic artworks resulting from “the World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today” competition; now the largest of its kind in the world, launched by Erotic Signature on the internet. Every year, Erotic Signature sets out to find talent, whether completely unknown or already established. A top-class international jury chooses winners in the categories of Fine Art, Sculpture, Photography and Digital Art, and awards prizes of US$ 15,000 to the six best contributions. The best 200 works of art from the competition are also published in the self-titled book “The World’s Greatest Erotic Art of Today”, the second edition of which has recently been released. ARTundressed shows numerous works from both editions and presents the winners of the 2006 and 2007 competitions. Both editions can be bought at the Beate Uhse Erotica Museum.

In summary: ARTundressed draws on erotic art, music, fashion and entertainment to display the “desire-laden beauty of the erotic”. It is this combination which makes the exhibition unique and makes a visit to the Beate Uhse Museum a fulfilling artistic experience.
